The spine is designed to move along certain anatomical planes in a smooth effortless gliding manner. If a spinal segment (two adjacent vertebras and the disc space between them) is restricted in this movement, it is termed “spinal segment dysfunction”. This will cause an increase in the spinal fluid pressure in that spinal segment, which in turn causes the nerves that emanate from that section not function properly.

What happens when spinal movement is restricted?

This will lead to muscles that are weaker, imbalanced, and filled with painful trigger points. The animal will have focal sore spots on their back that will prevent good performance. By restoring spinal motion, pain is relieved, blood supply is increased, and muscle function is balanced

What kind of problems are frequently treated in the equine population?

Chiropractic therapy is frequently used as an effective therapy for horses. Most of the horses we treat are performance horses. Regular chiropractic care allows them to compete and perform at their best. Back soreness and compensations can be relieved, resulting in better performance. Regular chiropractic care also encourages good balanced muscle function. This allows the animal to land evenly on all four feet, minimizing the development of arthritis and soft tissue injuries.

The following conditions respond well to chiropractic:

Not really lame but not moving well

Back soreness and irritability

Bucking (cold back)

Not standing well for shoeing

Short strided

Head shaking

Restricted neck motion and poor neck flexion

We always recommend that a horse be adjusted prior to any lameness evaluation. Some horses just get better with the therapy and a veterinary workup is no longer needed. If a problem persists after the adjustment, it is easier for the veterinarian to detect the primary problem because the secondary compensations have been corrected.
